Identify Prepositions
A word that shows the connection between a thing or a pronoun and different words in a sentence is called a preposition.
They occur before a noun or a pronoun.
For example:
- There is a kitten in the basket.
Some common prepositions in English are in, on, at, up, down, under, over, above, below, across, through, into, onto, of, off, out of, in front of, behind, with, by, beside, among, between, since, for, from, to, along, towards etc.
There are prepositions which show place, time and direction.
Prepositions of place show where someone or something is.
For example:
- Bella is waiting at the entrance. Here, ‘at’ shows Bella’s position.
Prepositions of time shows when something happens or has happened.
For example:
- They go to church on Sundays. “On” says when an event happens.
Prepositions of direction shows the direction in which something or someone comes or goes.
For example:
- I’m going to the market. ‘To’ indicates where the person is going.
