What is a Simile?

A simile is a type of figurative language that uses the terms like or as to make a comparison between two objects that have something in common. The simile is used to explain anything, a situation, an emotion, or an action by comparing it to something else in order to make the statement more creative and artistic.

A simile, when employed as a literary device, can give a piece of writing a more emotive and nuanced sense, and it allows the author to better convey of the description by employing this form of figure of speech as a comparison.

Example:

  • The shirt is as white as snow
  • The shirt is white like snow
  • Joy is as cool as a cucumber
  • Busy as a bee
  • Brave as an ion
