A sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense and it has a subject and a predicate.

A sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a period, question mark, or exclamation mark.

There are four different types of sentences. They are

Declarative sentences

A sentence that makes a simple statement is known as a declarative or an assertive sentence. These are statements which tell us about someone or something.

A declarative sentence ends with a period.

For example: Jane is a singer.

Declarative sentences can be affirmative or negative.

Affirmative sentences give some positive information about something or someone.

For example: Peter is a good artist.

Negative sentences state that something is false or incorrect.

For example: Peter is not a good artist.

Interrogative sentences

The sentences which ask questions are known as interrogative sentences. They end with a question mark(?).

For example: Where are you going?

Interrogative sentences can be positive or negative.

For example: Why are you late? (Positive)

Why didn’t you go to school? (Negative)

Imperative sentences

Sentences that express commands, polite requests, advices or suggestions are known as imperative sentences.

These sentences usually end with a period but under certain conditions they end with an exclamation mark.

For example: Open the door. (Command)

Please switch on the fan. (Request)

Work hard. (Advice)

Let’s go for a movie. (Suggestion)

Exclamatory sentences

Exclamatory sentences are statements that express powerful emotions. These sentences end with an exclamation mark.
