Key Concepts
- Capacity
- Liter
Introduction
In a shop, Jacob went to buy some quantity of mango juice. The shopkeeper showed Jacob two jars of cuboidal and cylindrical shape and asked in which jar should he give?
He wanted more and was thinking of the jar that would hold more juice. How can we say the jar that can hold more juice, and how can we tell how much it can hold?
To tell or to discuss these topics, we need to know
- What is capacity?
- What do we use to measure capacity?
14.4 Estimate Liquid Volume
14.4.1 Capacity, Liter
Capacity: The maximum amount of liquid or something that a container like thing can hold is defined as capacity.
Capacity
How much a container can hold?

Liter: The measure of the quantity of the liquid is liter. One metric unit of the capacity is liter. We denote it by L.
How much a container can hold?

What is the capacity of the pail?
This bottle hold about 1 liter

Compare the capacity of the water bottle to the capacity of the pail.
The pail appears to be large enough to hold several liters.
Count how many times you can fill a liter container and empty it into the pail.
This pail holds about 10 liters.
Conversion of the Liter to the other measuring units.

14.5 Measure Liquid Volume
14.5.1 Measuring of Liquid
We use the examples and understand the measuring of the liquid.
Example:
Sarah wanted to fill the container with water. She used a bottle that measures 1 liter is taken and used to fill the container. With the help of the bottle, she used 4 times fully filled bottles and 1 time partially filled bottle to completely fill the container with the water. What is the quantity of water that a container can hold?
Solution:
The bottle measures 1 liter and is used 4 times, so the container holds 4 liters.
The partially filled bottle is also used to completely fill the container. So the capacity of the container is more than 4 liters and less than 5 liters. We cannot accurately say what amount was, as the measurement was not accurate.

By the above process, we use for measuring the liquid, if required, we even convert the liters into milliliters for our comfort and solve the problem.
14.5.2 Word Problems involving Volume
Example:
Jordan opened a Lime juice stall in the exhibition. He combined 2 liters of lime with 8 liters of water. He poured them in the glasses for the customers. The glass has a capacity of 0.25 liters. How many glasses can he sell with the juice he has?
Solution:
He combined 2 liters of lime with 8 liters of water. So, he had a total of 10 liters of juice. If he pours 0.25 liters of juice in each glass, the number of glasses he can sell is 10 upon 0.25.
10/0.25=40
He can sell 40 glasses of juice.
Exercise:
- The football team brought a 20 liters water tin with them to avoid dehydration during the match. At half time, each player had 1 liter of water from the tin. The goalkeeper had only 500 mL of water. How much quantity is left in the tin?
- 2. 2 L 750 mL + 1250 mL =
- Emma is serving the juice in 500 mL glasses. She served 50 attendants. How much quantity of juice did she serve in all?
- A water delivery company had a contract of serving 40 houses with 20 L of water each. How much quantity did the company need to serve the contract?
- The sanitizer company is making sanitizer bottles of 225 mL in each bottle. The company is making nearly 2000 such bottles in a month. How much amount of sanitizer did the company is making in a month?
What we have learned:
- What is capacity?
- What is the measure of the capacity?
- The conversion of the measure of capacity from one unit to other.
- The operations on the volume
- Word problems on the capacity(volume)
