The Relation between multiplication and division:

Multiplication and division are closely related. When we divide, we look to separate into equal groups, while multiplication involves joining equal groups.

  • 2 x 6 = 12 can be written as 12 ÷ 2 = 6.
  • 3 x 5 = 15 can be written as 15 ÷ 3 = 5.
  • 4 x 7 = 28 can be written as 28 ÷ 4 = 7.
  • 5 x 6 = 30 can be written as 30 ÷ 5 = 6.

4.2.1 Multiplication facts to divide with 2

Example1:

Shan went to this shop. He saw 8 candles on the table. A worker has to put them equally in 2 packets. How many candles will be there in one packet?

Solution:

Find 8 ÷ 2.

Example 1:

Rosalind wants to pack 9 donuts for her friends. She packs 3 donuts into each box. How many boxes of donuts were there?

Find 9 ÷ 3.

What number times 3 is 9.                                      

3 x 3 = 9.

Example 1:

Chris arranged 16 squares in 4 rows with colors. How many squares are arranged in each row?

Solution:

Find 16 ÷ 4.

What number times 4 is 16.

4 x 4 = 16.

4. 2.4 Multiplication facts to divide with 5

Example 1:

Gloria distributed fruits to her students. She distributed 20 fruits among 5 children equally. How many fruits did each child get?

Solution:

Find 20 ÷ 5

What number times 5 is 20

5 x 4 = 20

20 ÷ 5 = 4
